Description: Gagaku is a kind of traditional performing arts, which has been passed down for over 1200 years. It is considered one of the oldest music ensembles in the world for having remained the same over the years as the music of the imperial court. With brightly coloured costumes and a decorated stage, this will be a unique cultural performance for foreign visitors.

Description:As Japan’s representative traditional performing arts, Noh has gained a high reputation across the world. See through your own eyes the beautiful and graceful world the actors express and describe to the audience throughout the performance. For the Hands-on Noh segment, the audience not only watches the play but also learns about the difficulty of acting in a Noh play. After the lesson, the audience can relax and enjoy watching the climax of the play.

Description: In comparison to Noh plays which raise classical themes in subtle or tragic dramas, Kyogen is a light-hearted comedy that is taken from the daily lives of the commoners. Bantering between master and servant, mishaps, and bargaining between the rich or lord and the low commoner, are common acts played in Kyogen, leading to a different type of drama compared to Noh. Kyogen allows the audience to relax and laugh, while Noh is rather intense.For hands-on Kyogen, members from the audience will be able to come up to the stage and learn how to laugh, cry, and other common aspects of acting in Kyogen.

Description: This is a musical performance with Japan’s ancient string instrument, koto, and woodwind instrument, shakuhachi. The beautiful, resounding music that people will hear when they enter a banquet hall will definitely make a lasting impression for everyone. The shakuhachi solo performance is also strongly recommended.

Description: Taiko drum performances are rooted in different regions all over Japan. Volunteer organizations in those areas pass down the traditions to the next generation. Nara also has several Taiko drum performance teams throughout the prefecture. There is a great variety of teams available to perform, ranging from adults to children and an all-female team.

Description: Kagami biraki is a ceremony where the lid of a sake barrel is broken open by a wooden mallet and the sake is served to everyone attending. This ceremony is a regular event at the opening ceremony of many parties, but holding it in Nara, the birthplace of refined sake, will be extra special. The glasses or wooden sake boxes that participants receive to take home also make this event popular. The name of the conference can also be branded on the wooden sake boxes (additional fee required).

Description: Naomi Utamakura’s musical performance on the Man’yoshu, the oldest collection of Japanese poetry.
