The 17th UNESCO General Assembly in 1972 adopted the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
The World Heritage sites located in Nara Prefecture are as follows:The Buddhist Monuments in the Horyuji Temple Area (Horyuji Temple and Hokkiji Temple), first registered in Japan in December, 1993; Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara (Todaiji Temple, Kofukuji Temple, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Kasugayama Primeval Forest, Gangoji Temple, Yakushiji Temple, Toshodaiji Temple and Heijo Palace Site) registered in December, 1998; and the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range registered in July, 2004.
The Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range cuts across Nara, Wakayama and Mie Prefectures.
In Nara Prefecture, the Yoshino-Ohmine Hallow Grounds (Mt. Yoshino, Yoshino-Mikumarijinja Shrine, Kimpujinja Shrine, Kimpusenji Temple, Yoshimizujinja Shrine and Ohminesenji Temple) and the Pilgrimage Roads ( Ohmine-Okugakemichi, including Tamakijinja Shrine and Kumano-Sankei-Michi Kohechi).
are included in the World Heritage site.
